Guest Post: Prenups

By Bethany and Scott Palmer, authors of First Comes Love, Then Comes Money
Prince Charles and Lady Di didn’t…and it cost the Prince more than 17 million pounds ($27 million today) during their divorce.   As you can imagine, as much as people were chatting about what Kate’s dress would look like, just as many were speculating about whether William and Kate would sign a prenup.
As we reflect on the royal wedding, here is a statistic to ponder: the number one cause for divorce is miscommunication about money.  In most cases, it’s better to “get it all on the table” versus waiting until it’s too late.  Many wonder whether signing a prenup is setting them up for divorce.  The answer is, no.  There are some very practical reasons to have one in place.
Here are some tips to having a positive prenup conversation with your partner:
1. Set the tone: It’s important to keep it positive.  Obviously with this type of conversation, it’s easy to become defensive.  You can open the conversation by saying, “I would never want money to come between us and ruin our relationship.  Why don’t we explore some reasons to have a prenup.  Let’s talk about the positive and negative aspects.”
2. Here are some points to talk through:
• Why would a prenup be important to you?
• What are our debts?  A prenup absolves one from the others’ debts.
• Is there a family home that needs to stay with one person in the relationship?  A prenup ensures that the family home stays within the family.
• Are there children from previous marriages we need to think about?  A prenup can help divvy assets amongst children.
• Is there a family business?  A prenup will keep the family business intact and protect other siblings and parents.

3. Once you have agreed upon a prenup take these important steps:
• Be sure to set your prenup up a number of months before the wedding – wedding planning can be stressful, be sure have this done and out of the way.
• List all of your assets and liabilities – this can be a relationship saver because there will be no financial surprises.
• Set it up to strengthen the relationship – start your relationship out right, clear financial communication is key to making sure your love stays strong.

Remember, no two relationships are the same.  You may not be privileged into royalty but the positives and negatives of prenuptuals effect us all.  Decide what is the best decision for you, and move forward together.

Weekend Wedding Wrap-up

I come across a lot of deals, discounts, giveaways, etc throughout the week, so I thought I'd start doing a post on either Saturday or Sunday to fill you in on all that stuff.

Hope it helps and some of this stuff is useful for you!

Your fiancé picked the perfect girl to marry, so he must have great taste

The hit UK show “Don’t Tell the Bride” is coming to America and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.  We are casting dynamic couples who are currently engaged, but lack the funds to have a dream wedding.  Each episode of “Don’t Tell the Bride” focuses on one couple’s big day and what it took to make the wedding happen.  The bride and groom agree to avoid all communication with each other for three weeks before the ceremony.  In exchange, the groom is given $25,000 to plan the entire wedding without the bride’s input.  Have no fear; each groom ultimately creates a unique wedding to celebrate his true love!

Casting Requirements:
- Must be over 18 years of age
- Currently engaged
- Willing and able to get legally married between July 2011 – September 2011
- Have a few groomsmen and bridesmaids with big personalities willing to be on the show with you
- No long distance or destination weddings. You must be willing to marry within driving distance of couple’s residence(s).

Please email bride@shedmediaus.com with the following information:

  • Bride’s name and Groom’s name
  • Bride’s phone number
  • Bride’s email
  • Bride’s resident city
  • Groom’s phone number
  • Groom’s email
  • Groom’s resident city
  • A few sentences about you and why you are an ideal couple for the show
  • Wedding status – where you are in the process
  • Current photo of bride and groom (make sure we can clearly see you both)

Thomasville is giving away a dream bedroom set to one couple getting married between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012.

Cupcake Bar

Cupcakes are becoming more and more popular at weddings.  Most people get the nicely decorated a bakery.  A great idea would be to just have them frosted at the bakery and then leave the toppings for your guests to choose.  You could also just have unfrosted cupcakes in different flavors and let your guests frost them and add the topping, but that may get a little messier.

Ice Cream Bar

If you're having a summer wedding (or just getting married anywhere in the South) and ice cream bar would be a great addition to your wedding.  Pick a couple of flavors of ice cream and then have tons of toppings for your guests to choose from.  This is a kick back on an old childhood favorite and your guests will love it!

Cookie Buffet

You can set a cookie bar up just like a candy bar, just instead of candy, fill the jars up with cookies!  Cookies could easily be made at home or bought from a grocery store or bakery.  I would recommend having a variety of flavors so that you can please everyone.  Some good choices would be chocolate chip, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, macaroons, and any of your other favorites.

Candy Buffet

Candy buffets are a cute addition to a wedding and a great favor for your guests.

You can pick up glass jars at a ton of different stores, like Dollar Tree, Marshalls, and Michaels.  They don't need to look a like and can be different heights and sizes.

Find some candy in your wedding colors to fill your jars.  If your colors are used any holidays, check after holiday sales.  You can normally find reds, whites, and pinks after Valentines Day; pastels after Easter; red, white, and blue after 4th of July; orange and black after Halloween; and red and green after Christmas.

You can buy cheap bags at Michaels with a 40% off coupon for your guests to fill up with candy.  You can also add some stickers or ribbon for them to close their bags up after their full so they can take them home.

Do You Have a Rain Plan?

Outdoor weddings are so popular now and people often forget about one of the most important factors of the wedding day.  The weather!  The weather is so unpredictable and could put a huge damper on your wedding day.  That is why a Rain Plan is such an important element to have for your wedding day.

If you have your heart set on an outdoor setting, try to find one that also has a building that you can use in case of an emergency.  If your venue does not have a building, you'll need to either rent a tent (which can be quite hard to do at the last minute) or you will need to find a completely different venue (which can be even harder to do at the last minute).  When looking at the building, make sure that it can accommodate enough tables and chairs for all of your guests.  If it doesn't, you will need to cut your guest list to that size, just in case it does rain.

If you're holding an outdoor wedding at a location that does not have an building for you to use, I highly recommend renting a tent.  Yes, this can get very expensive, but it will save you the hassle of finding one when there is projected rain on your wedding day.  Plus, even if it's not raining, the tent can provide your guests shade if it's hot outside.

We were holding our ceremony outdoors and our reception indoors.  We had to have a rain plan just in case it rained out our ceremony.  Our rain plan was to just allow guests to sit at their tables in the reception hall and hold the ceremony in front of the fireplace.  It was not the ideal situation, but it still would have allowed us to get married and keep our guests comfortable.

If you're having an outdoor wedding, do you have a rain plan?

Simple and Cheap Centerpiece

These centerpieces were created for a co-workers bridal shower and I think that they would be absolutely wonderful for a wedding!

You can pick up the vases with a 40% off coupon at Michaels.  Then, fill it about 3/4 of the way with water.  Buy some flowers that you love and snip just the head off of them.  Then, float them on water.  It might take a little while to figure out how many look good in the vase, but just play around with it until it looks right.

Very low cost centerpieces, but they look gorgeous!

Easy Canvas Prints Review

We haven't really put too many of our weddings pictures around our apartment yet because we don't really have too much space.  I love our wedding pictures though and want to display them proudly.

Easy Canvas Prints gave me the opportunity to review their product and I was ecstatic because I could finally have a use for at least one of our wedding pictures.

Their website is extremely easy to use and you could easily order a canvas print in less than 30 minutes (that is if you can make your decision on a picture).

The first step to ordering a print is to pick your size.  The have tons of standard sizes as well as allowing you to customize your own size to fit your space.  I picked an 8x8 print, which I think will look cute propped up on a bookshelf or hung in a photo collage.

You upload your picture in the second step.  I did a lot of this because I had a hard time figuring which print would look best on the canvas.  You also have the option to customize your picture.

Then, you pick your canvas border.  I just had my picture wrap around the edges, but you can also mirror the image on the wrap.

Then, the last step is to actually customize your picture if need be.  My picture was already black and white, so I didn't need this option.

Easy as pie!

The canvas came ready to hang with a metal hanger on the back.  Since we're moving soon, I just propped it up on the mantle until it has a home.

How are you planning on displaying your wedding pictures in your home?

Engagement Party Outfit

There are so many parties that you will go to as a bride to be and the outfits for those can get expensive.

The first party that you will most likely attend is your engagement party.  Try for something dressy, but a little conservative since you might be meeting some members of your fiance's family for the first time.

Dress - Kohls, $48
Cardigan - Kohls, $36
Shoes - Kohls, $50

Do not pay full price for these items at Kohls!  They always have sales, so you can get them for much cheaper than what I posted.  While I was looking for items for this outfit, all items were 50% off.
